Kolisi MVP, Moegoe for Hougi

The Raters crowned Springbok flanker Siya Kolisi the MVP for his two-try performance against Argentina. The grades were less encouraging for scrumhalf Francois Hougaard.

All Out Rugby’s Rate the Player offers fans the opportunity to vent (or fist pump) after the final whistle by scoring the Bok players and coach, and even the referee, with a grade out of 10. Every rating is tallied in the official All Out Rugby Player Ratings which close at midnight every Monday.

It was after midnight on Saturday when Raters logged in to start grading the Springboks in the aftermath of an impressive win against the Pumas in Argentina.

Kolisi jumped into an early lead with a 7.8 grade, and he stretched that lead to arrive at Monday night’s deadline with an 8.5 Rating!

Hooker Malcolm Marx was the only other player to score in the 8s, while six of his teammates ranked in the 7s, Jaco Kriel (last week’s MVP) chief among them with a 7.6.

But the Raters weren’t all smiles. Though Bok fans were thrilled with the result, the AOR clickers graded five starters with a sub-6.0 score, including Uz Cassiem (5.9), Jan Serfontein (5.7), Jesse Kriel (5.4), Raymond Rhule (5.3) an, worst of all, Hougaard (4.5).

It’s unclear whether the veteran scrumhalf earned the Moegoe of the Week award due to substandard tactical kicking or the errant pass in Argentina’s 22 which was intercepted, but Hougaard did little to convince coach Allister Coetzee that he shouldn’t reinstall Ross Cronje at No 9 in Perth next week.

The reverse may be true for Jean-Luc du Preez. The Sharks thumper was, for the second week in a row, the most valued player on the Bok bench (6.6) with a Rating that trumped six starters.

Coetzee’s approval Rating climbed to 5.8 from last week’s 5.5, and referee Pascal Gauzere (6.2) was far better received by the Raters than fellow frenchman, Romain Poite had been in Port Elizabeth.

AOR Player Ratings – Argentina vs Springboks (Salta), August 26:
MVP: Siya Kolisi (8.5)
Moegoe: Francois Hougaard (4.5)
Top bench-warmer: Jean-Luc du Preez (6.6)

Sorry I didn’t vote, agree with most of the player ratings but I actually thought the ref was excellent. he was consistent and made the right calls re the cards in the game.

Ja, but we haven’t played against the big guns yet…but we’re on the right track. Defence needs to tighten up a bit, although much better than last year. Defend and attack when opportunities are there.. Against the all blacks and sissies, sorry Aussies we need to take the game to them..no use waiting and defending at all times..hit them hard and play it fast and wide..

3 Subs also sticking up their hands for Moegoe of the Week. If Mbonambi is the 2nd best hooker in the country then we’re in trouble. But luckily that’s not the case.
Marx (a.k.a Bismark 2.0) has got the goods to make that no 2 jersey his own for the next 10 years. A legend in the making, watch and enjoy!
