Kriel glad, Kriel mad

If Jaco and Jesse Kriel wear mood rings, they’ll be very different colours after the flanker learns he was voted MVP and the centre discovers he’s been branded Moegoe of the Week!

The All Out Rugby Player Ratings offer fans the opportunity to vent (or high five) after the final whistle by rating the Bok players and coach, and the referee with a grade out of 10. Every rating is tallied in the official All Out Rugby Player Ratings which close at midnight on a Monday.

The Raters were most impressed by Jaco Kriel as South Africa extended an unbeaten start to the season, opening the Rugby Championship with a solid 37-15 victory against Argentina at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

The Springbok openside flanker finished with a 7.6 rating, pipping hooker Malcolm Marx (7.5) to the MVP title by the narrowest margin. Kriel was replaced at the 60-minute mark and his MVP title is a surprising choice from Joe Rater given that a potent scrum was credited for providing the foundation for the win, and tighthead prop Coenie Oosthuizen (who scored a 7.3 grade) was the official man of the match.

Flyhalf Elton Jantjies was the only member of the fly corps to score in the 7s as the exploits of the backs got little response from the Raters – none less so than Jesse Kriel who checked in with a team-low 5.7 that consigned him to the Moegoe of the Week award.

Jaco Kriel made way for Jean-Luc du Preez at the end of the third quarter, and the replacement flanker made a hefty impact. Though he only played for 20 minutes, Du Preez did enough to draw a 7.2 grade from the Raters!

After an embarrassing 2016 season, fans are clearly hesitant to heap praise on Allister Coetzee and the Bok coach was tagged with a mediocre 5.5. And Romain Poite’s 2013 Eden Park nightmare remains very vivid for the Raters who labelled the French ref with a 3.6, despite a relatively uneventful performance.

AOR Player Ratings – Springboks vs Argentina, August 19:
MVP: Jaco Kriel (7.6)
Moegoe: Jesse Kriel (5.7)
Top bench-warmer: Jean-Luc du Preez (7.2)

The Citizen rated Coenie an 8. On the red Jersey eish still a hard tablet to swallow but at least it’s just one game. Boks did overall ok just a few small niggles to rectify before Saturday. Love your blog. Thanks

So Rhule has lost his Moegoe crown! But only by a whisker. Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll get it back soon.

The bench’s ratings are also interesting. Obviously Joe Public thinks that quite a few of our reserves are not up to standard. My personal pick of the cling-ons is Mbonambi and De Allende. I can think of 3 or 4 players who are more disserving of the Bok jersey than each of them.

Bosch’s rating is a bit harsh, but it underlines the fact that he is not confident or mature enough to wear the green and gold… yet.

As for the ref – Poite rhymes with…

  • Spartan

So Cassiem wins two turnovers and makes a big line break yet only gets 5.9? Rhule wins a turnover, scores a try whilst Serfontein gifts a try to the opposition but Serfontein gets a better rating than Rhule? Kolisi wins two penalties (one by smashing Creevy off his ruck), works hard in the ruck, but gets a much lower score than Marx (who only one penalty)?

Seems like the raters are also influenced by race.

I don’t think we should always jump to race…
I also believe a lot of people (me included) vote without viewing the stats.

      1. A lot of people believe Rhule shouldn’t be in the team and this has been reflected in all his ratings
      2. Rhule is also terrible at defence, 64% tackle completion is not good enough
      3. While Marx was only awarded with one penalty won in the stats, we saw him and Jaco Kriel both on the ball on a few occasions, and awarded points to both (the stats only gave it to
      4. We also saw Kolisi miss tackles (75% tackle completion according to stats) and gave less points
      5. If we HAVE to look at race:
      Jaco (7.6), Marx (7.5), Coenie (7.3), Jantjies (7), Kolisi (6.8), Skosan (6.7), Ross (6.6)
The only race winning is RED
Perhaps the Lions are *generally* getting better ratings

Totally agree, the race goggles are on! Rugby hasn’t really transformed that much, sadly.

Rhule played an awesome game but misses the moegoe by a whisker. Mmmm beast had an unbelievable game but gets a 6.5? Lol and people wanna tel me race is a thing of the past.

I feel that people only see Rhule’s great attacking ability. What about the mid 60’s tackle completion rate of Saturday that he had? What about the mid 50’s tackle completion rate of Super rugby that he had? There is no doubt about his attacking ability BUT making only 60% of your tackles against a team like NZ will cost you a lot of tries. We really need a wing that can tackle.
