Matfield joins Lions

Reports have confirmed that South Africa’s most capped Test player, and former Springbok captain, Victor Matfield has been appointed forwards coach at the Lions.

Following the departure of Johan Ackermann to Gloucester, the Lions have shuffled their coaching staff, promoting Swys de Bruin to head coach, shifting JP Ferreira from defence coach to attack coach, and calling up Lions U19 coach Joey Mongalo to take over the vacant defence role.

Matfield, 40, played 127 Tests for the Springboks between 2001 and 2015 and won three Super Rugby titles with the Bulls before serving as an attack coach for the Pretoria-based team in 2013.
