UJ surprise, Maties cruise

Maties harnessed a strong tailwind at Danie Craven Stadium on Monday night to blitz Madibaz in the second half of a 35-16 comeback win for the Varsity Cup frontrunners.

After trailing 11-5 at the break, Maties lock Ian Groenewald, fullback Craig Barry, centre Michal Haznar and scrumhalf Brendon Nell crossed for tries as the home team overhauled Madibaz.

The showdown between Shimlas and CUT  in Bloemfontein was postponed due to waterlogged fields, but rain couldn’t rescue the Ikeys from a 20-13 reverse against Pukke in Potchefstroom.

Last week, in Round 3 of the Varsity Cup, slippery conditions served as a leveller of sorts and UCT surprised Shimlas 22-7 at Shimla Park. But a steady shower didn’t slow Pukke down on Monday night as they bounced back from a 31-9 loss against Maties to halt the Ikeys’ two-game streak.

The hosts were in total control, streaking into a 13-3 lead and absorbing a yellow card to winger Justin Newman. UCT consoled themselves with a last-minute try from lock Gary Porter.

Flyhalf Divan Nel kicked six penalties as UJ survived yellow peril to bank their first win of the season, a nail-biting 18-17 result against Tuks.

The numbers were tipped in the visitors’ favour for one quarter of the match as UJ winger Godfrey Ramaboea and flanker Wian Conradie each spent time in the sin-bin.

The contest was decided by a goal-kicking duel between Nel and Tuks counterpart, Tinus de Beer.

In the end, the Tuks No 10 blinked first, missing the attempted conversion of No 8 Denzil Hill’s late try, and UJ held on for the win.

Heading into Round 5, Maties’ 15 log points gives them a one-point cushion on Pukke, while Tuks and Shimlas are in third and fourth place respectively with 10 log points.

The Ikeys are just outside the playoff berths with nine points, Wits and UJ each have six points, Madibaz have five and CUT are still hunting their first win of the season.
