Raters hail Kings!

The Player Raters were euphoric about the Kings’ first victory against South African opponents and it resulted in a frenzy of clicks!

There were even enough spectators at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to start a Mexican wave as the Kings marched to a memorable 35-32 win against the Sharks in Round 12.

Emotions aside, Alshaun Bock, Lionel Cronje and Andisa Ntsila delivered work of such a high standard that all three were named in this week’s Stats XV, along with Cheetahs jumper Francois Uys, Lions lock Andries Ferreira, Sharks tighthead prop Coenie Oosthuizen and Bulls loosehead Lizo Gqoboka:

1 – Lizo Gqoboka (Bulls)

Defence: 1 tackle, 100% completion

Bock, 34, is the oldest rookie in Super Rugby history and he wasn’t waiting around for a second invitation after being called up to replace Wandile Mjekevu. The journeyman wing scored two tries on seven runs and put Cronje into space for a third.

Ntsila was the biggest obstacle to the Sharks scoring intentions as he racked up 21 tackles at a superb 95% completion-rate, and Cronje got a full house of points from a try, three conversions, two penalties and a drop goal.

However, the Raters made it clear that they thought the Stats XV selectors completely missed the mark in the tight five.

Uys (4.1), Ferreira (5.3), Oosthuizen (4.4) and Gqoboka (5.1) were voted out to make way for Kings heavies Wilhelm van der Sluys (6.6), Irne Herbst (6.5), Ross Geldenhuys (6.1) and Schalk van der Merwe (6.3).

While three of those picks may have been inspired by the milestone result, Van der Merwe buckled Oosthuizen like a 1983 Nissan Pulsar at the junkyard!
